Many women who decide to start a family are surprised when they run into bumps in the road. It is actually more common than many people realize to not conceive quickly. In fact, only about 60% of women get pregnant after the first three months of trying, and this drops with age.

There are many things that can be done, especially during the first year, even before seeking infertility treatment. During this important period, it is vital to maintain good health habits and nourish your body, to boost your odds of conceiving, and of having a healthy and viable conception.

Of course, altering your diet is not the same as hormone treatments or fertility drugs, but research has shown that diet and lifestyle can truly have an impact and it is the best place to start.

Some factors have more of a statistical significance on conception than others, and these should be taken into consideration when trying to enhance your fertility naturally.

Weight, specifically a BMI less than 20 greater than 30, can negatively impact fertility. If you smoke or drink more than two cups of coffee a day, this can also reduce your ability to conceive. Cutting out bad habits, exercising, and eating healthy and nutritious foods will not only help with your fertility, it will also lower your cholesterol levels and blood pressure, stabilize your moods and make pregnancy easier on your body.

When deciding on a preconception, fertility-boosting diet, try to include the following food choices for ultimate baby preparation.

Avocados: Not only are these a wonderful, healthy fat, but they are also a great source of potassium and vitamin E,  which can help in developing the uterine lining.

Pomegranates: This symbolic and historical fertility fruit is truly a blessing to a preconception diet, as it is rich in antioxidants as well as including vitamin C and K.

Berries: Another fun and easy snacking fruit that is full of antioxidants, especially blueberries and raspberries. Did you know that flavanols give berries that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect which has been shown to reduce and repair cell damage?

Dark leafy greens: veggies like spinach and kale are heavy in iron, and folate, which helps with the development of the fetal pole, preventing neural tube defects.  You should be having 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid each day.

Wild Salmon: The omega-3 fatty acids and DHA in salmon are extremely important for a developing baby’s brain and eye development. Optimal levels of omega-3s have been shown to have an impact on fertility.
