The Battle Against Migraines: A Quick Guide To Headache Relief
By Brian James Rose
There are many remedies for headache pain relief, from OTC medications to herbal concoctions. Below, we list the most commonly prescribed remedies.
Migraines: A range of triptan drugs are usually prescribed for migraines. They include naratriptan (Amerge), frovatriptan (Frova), and sumatriptan (Imitrex). Triptan medications can’t prevent migraines, however. They can only address the neurological changes that led to the migraine.
Tension headaches: OTC drugs like Aleve are recommended for tension headaches. However, studies show that a combination of Rx (consisting of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine) may be more effective.
Menstrual headaches: Many doctors prescribe triptan drugs, naproxen, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for relief.
Alcohol or caffeine-induced headaches: Several OTC medications may help relieve pain, such as Aleve, Excedrin, or Motrin. Over-medication, however, can result in rebound headaches.
Cluster headaches: Many doctors prescribe Lidocaine (in the form of a nasal spray), triptans, or oxygen therapy for relief.
