Blood sugar (glucose) is fuel found in your blood that comes from the food you eat. This is a main source of energy for our bodies. It is vital to keep this sugar at optimal levels because both high and low glucose levels can negatively affect your body.  Diabetes occurs when your blood glucose level is too high.  This could be from the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin (Type 1) or because your body has become resistant to your own insulin over time (Type 2).  Insulin is a hormone that breaks down glucose.  Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent and largely preventable.  In the United States, approximately 10% of our population has diabetes, which equates to 30 million people. In persons above 65, one in every four people are diabetic.
